Sushi

Raw fish is no longer frowned on in the US, and almost everyone has had sushi at one time or another.

The Origin of Sushi

Sushi’s origins can be traced back millennia to the rice fields of Asia, specifically China. You may find this shocking since most people believe that sushi originated in Japan. This is not true. Although Japan is the sushi capital of the world and was responsible for the introduction of the dish to travelers, sushi’s origins can be traced back to a Chinese recipe called narezushi.

This dish was made up of fermented fish and rice. Contrary to popular belief, the dish was not fermented or salted just for taste. It is believed that the dish was first created in the 2nd Century BC, which means it predates fridges by almost 2,000 years.

Sushi in Western Culture

After the Meiji Restoration, Japanese immigrants brought sushi to the West in the early 1900s. It was popular with the upper class, but not everyone. As Japanese immigration decreased in the late 1800s, the popularity of sushi declined.

Sushi became more popular in the United States after World War II when Japan was once again open to international trade, tourism, and business. This trend started to gain traction in America during the 1960s. Middle-class Americans were eager to try sushi and loved it.

Look to the Future

Sushi is a popular food in the United States. Even the most adventurous diners have probably tried a California roll or other sushi rolls. Thanks to the constant spirit of innovation by chefs, there is always something new to try.

There are hundreds of sushi rolls to choose from, with new ones being added every day. Chefs are always trying out new ideas, whether it’s sushi made with non-traditional ingredients like raw or cooked beef or other innovations such as sushi bowls and burritos.

It’s now easier than ever to find sushi rolls that you will enjoy, even if you have never liked traditional sushi. The history of the dish is not yet complete – it’s still being written. We expect more chefs to continue to experiment, and create new dishes.
